Our Heritage: The Spirit of Waraku Tougei

Nestled in the historic Gion district of Kyoto, a city renowned for its profound cultural heritage, Waraku Tougei stands as a testament to the enduring allure of Japanese ceramic art. Our journey began over three generations ago, inspired by the rich lineage of Kyoto's master potters and the tranquil beauty of the surrounding Kamogawa River landscape. We are more than just a studio; we are custodians of an ancient craft, deeply rooted in the philosophies of 'wabi-sabi' – finding beauty in imperfection and transience.

Founded on an unwavering respect for the elemental nature of clay and the meticulous dedication required in its transformation, Waraku Tougei is a sanctuary where passion converges with time-honored precision. Every lump of clay is sourced locally, chosen for its unique character and potential to become something truly extraordinary. We believe fervently that each piece of pottery we create is not merely an object, but a vessel carrying a unique narrative, echoing the artisan's soul and resonating with the discerning taste of its future owner. This philosophy guides our hands and hearts in every stage of creation.

Our core mission is to fashion exceptional, handcrafted ceramics that seamlessly integrate artistic merit with functional elegance, enriching daily life with moments of beauty and contemplation. We strive to make art accessible, something to be touched, used, and cherished. From intricately designed bespoke vases that capture a fleeting emotion to comprehensive custom dinnerware sets that elevate dining experiences, our approach is deeply collaborative.

We engage intimately with our clients, listening to their aspirations and translating their visions into tangible, enduring works of art that speak a universal language of craftsmanship. The spirit of 'omotenashi', Japanese hospitality, permeates our client interactions, ensuring a journey of creation that is as rewarding as the final piece itself. We are committed to sustainable practices, respecting the earth that provides our materials. Ultimately, Waraku Tougei aims to connect people to the soulful essence of handcrafted quality, offering pieces that will be treasured for generations to come, each a quiet reminder of Kyoto's artistic legacy and a promise of beauty that endures.

From Clay to Creation: Our Journey

Pottery design sketch and color palettes 1

Consultation & Design

Our journey for custom pieces commences with a comprehensive consultation. This is a dialogue where we attentively listen to your vision, explore your aesthetic preferences, discuss functional requirements, and understand the story you wish your piece to tell. Our artisans then translate these ideas into preliminary sketches and conceptual designs, ensuring a collaborative refinement before clay is touched.

Clay Preparation

The foundation of exceptional pottery lies in high-quality local Japanese clays. These are meticulously prepared through wedging – kneading to remove air bubbles and achieve a homogenous, pliable consistency, crucial for structural integrity and smooth throwing.

Throwing & Shaping

Our skilled artisans expertly throw clay on the wheel or hand-build forms. Each piece is shaped with precision, focus, and a deep connection to the evolving form, guided by decades of experience and an intimate feel for the material.

Trimming & Refining

Once leather-hard, pieces are trimmed to refine their shape, foot, and overall balance. Details are added at this stage, requiring a steady hand and an eye for proportion, perfecting the piece's graceful profile.

Bisque Firing

Dried pottery undergoes its first firing (bisque) around 900-1000°C, transforming it into a porous ceramic state. This strengthens the piece, making it easier to handle for glazing and preparing it to properly absorb the glaze.

Artisan applying glaze to a ceramic vase 6

Glazing

We apply our signature or custom-developed glazes by dipping, pouring, or brushing. Each recipe, a carefully guarded secret, interacts uniquely with the clay to create stunning visual effects, from smooth lustrous surfaces to textured mattes.

Final Firing

The glazed pieces return to the kiln for a final, high-temperature firing (1200-1300°C+). This vitrifies the clay and melts the glaze, fusing it to the clay to create the finished, durable, and beautiful surface.
